Innovation Riverside Cafe

Innovation's airy, informal riverside café is a home from home, popular with locals and welcoming to our many visitors. Pop in for a morning coffee; lunch with wine on the river terrace or afternoon tea with scones and cakes.

The wide-ranging menu takes in family friendly toasties and jacket potatoes alongside veggie and healthy options; home-made 'Dishes of the Day' and celebrated soups. We also serve 'Taylor's of Harrogate' Yorkshire tea and coffee plus locally brewed beers and good value house wines.

Trace the 700 years of HEBDEN BRIDGE MILL on the café's heritage story boards and see our on-going eco-power project in action: the restored millennium waterwheel and mighty Archimedes Screw which supply our river-powered electricity.

Heritage Information Boards in the Café

More than just a place to meet, have a bite or enjoy a drink with friends, INNOVATION Café is a Local History and Heritage talking point. Situated in the oldest part of this 700 year old historic Water Mill, the walls are lined with Story Boards recounting the past history of the mill, the town which has grown up around it and the lives of people who lived here.

Have a look at a map of the town as it was almost 150 years ago and take time to follow the 1000 year TIME LINE matching local events to those taking place nationally and internationally. Do you know what was happening here when King Henry VIII was being crowned in London, or when Joan of Arc was being tried and executed in France? What were local people doing whilst Francis Drake was fighting the Spanish Armada? When was our area among the richest places in the British Empire, if not the whole World? Read all about it on our Story Boards.

Hebden Bridge History Boards

AND, have a look at the Future Heritage in the making, displayed and explained in the café and outside on our delightful RIVERSIDE TERRACE. Walk outside and view the large ARCHIMEDES SCREW turning in the river, using the flow of the water to generate electricity to power the equipment that made your meal as well as to light and heat the premises.

See the screen in the café, giving real-time information about the output generated and greenhouse gasses saved by not using fossil fuels. See also the old 4 ton, 14ft diameter WATERWHEEL, now fully renovated and ready to add to the output from the screw. The bright red cabinet adjacent to the wheel is a HEATPUMP, boosting heat taken from the river water for our hot water and central heating systems.

KNOW that by choosing to eat and drink at the INNOVATION Café, you are doing your bit to save the planet from future global warming!
